While there, she also served as a freelance journalist and then as Chief News Correspondent before she retired in 2003.
Some of her coverage includes conflicts and disasters such as the American bombing of Tripoli in 1986, the Lockerbie bombing of 1988, the Iranian Embassy siege, and the north London crime scenes of serial killer Dennis Nilsen, in 1983. Her remarkable coverage was the report on the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. On top of this, Adie has also traveled all over the world and has reported news on wars like the war in Sierra Leone in 2000, the 1994 Rwandan genocide, and the war in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
Kate began her journalism career as an assistant presenter at BBC Radio Durham. From there, she moved and joined Radio Bristol where she worked from 1971 to 1975. Apart from working as a journalist, Adie also served as a speaker at the Gibraltar International Literary Festival. In 2019, she became the Chancellor of Bournemouth University where she replaced Baron Phillips of Worth Matraver.
