Coco Martin Latest News

Coco Martin is one of the Philippines’ biggest stars – because he’s an everyman

The 37-year-old is the lead in the nation’s biggest television show, Ang Probinsyano, and has become a trusted and admired celebrity He has been spotted at campaigns for Senator Grace Poe, the daughter of his hero Fernando Poe Junior – but will Coco make a foray into politics himself? Coco Martin is a Filipino everyman.
In-person, he’s shorter than you’d expect. Disarming; he’s also trim, handsome (but not too handsome) with an empathetic smile and warm eyes. When you meet him, he’s immediately familiar. He could be the mechanic from down the road, the kindly hospital orderly or the overseas foreign worker.
Nondescript. Ordinary, but trustworthy. Meanwhile, the Philippines is three years into President Rodrigo Duterte’s term in office and is fast approaching the all-important midterm polls – including the key senatorial races. The Republic is also face-to-face with the possible future of the Duterte legacy, as the first daughter and current Davao mayor Sara Duterte assembles her own slate of candidates while also dismissing the need for “truth-telling” in public life.
Now 37, Coco is the lead in the Philippines’ biggest television show, Ang Probinsyano (or “The Man from the Provinces”). According to Kantar Media, in February alone, the long-running ABS-CBN show had 41 percent of ratings across the country – an incredibly high level of penetration in this celebrity-obsessed nation of over 105 million.
When the series (Coco is also a creative consultant and occasionally directs) first kicked off back in 2015, it was an immediate hit. However, in 2016, as Duterte assumed the Presidency and imposed his macho approach to governing on the country, the show also shifted gear, responding to contemporary realities. Indeed, Coco Martin’s character Ricardo (or “Cardo”) Dalisay – a steadfast and incorruptible police officer – quickly became the cynosure of all Filipinos, reinforcing his popularity and huge commercial appeal.
It all seems to have paid off: Ang Probinsyano has so far run for six seasons and some 900 episodes. Cardo is brave, honorable and devoted to his family. Indeed, it’s hard – if not impossible – to separate Cardo from Coco the star. In the Philippines, actors (just consider Joseph Estrada) in their public lives are inevitably an amalgam of their most prominent roles.
Moreover, at a time when the national mood is so steeped in violence and profanity, the Cardo/Coco combine stands out all the more. Ang Probinsyano is great entertainment – the action is fast-paced, the storylines are rich in emotion, replete with love and betrayal.
The show ranges across society from the very heights of power and money to the dingiest slums of Tondo and the desperately poor rural interior. Moreover, the themes covered have become more complex, reflecting the country’s tensions: corruption, illegal drugs, gang warfare, and the lawlessness in the provinces.
In a recent episode, the fictional president, infuriated and distrustful of his long-time financial operator cum debt collector, a stout, hard-talking lady called Lily, calls for her elimination. It’s a profoundly disturbing television moment: as searing as anything from The Bridge or House of Cards.
Coco explains how he’s tried to enrich the plotlines and characterization: “I’ve drawn on my personal experiences, from where I grew up, the environment of the Philippines and the things I’ve seen in the news – I’ve turned them all into stories for Ang Probinsyano.”
The lead actor’s representation of the police force has also drawn criticism from the authorities. He explains: “I have been summoned many times to Camp Crame [the police headquarters], and been asked ‘Why are you tainting the image of the police?’.
I explained to them, ‘Perhaps you’ve forgotten, my character is a policeman. This guy goes through everything a normal policeman goes through. The police can be a good cop or a bad cop. I’ve shown both in the series’.” For a poor boy from the working-class neighborhood of Novaliches in Quezon City, Coco (his real name is Rodel Nacianceno) never thought he would make it this far.
“My parents were separated and I was a street kid. I was always fighting. I used to ask myself why I always ended up in trouble. My dad used to get into fights. He was more violent when he drank, which he did frequently while brandishing a gun.”
In the Philippine election, a reel thin line between actors and politicians Still, Coco’s rise from obscurity is nothing special. The Philippines is full of such stories. But his work and indeed his vision of the world has been shaped by two remarkable men whose career paths may well indicate Coco’s future.
The first is Cannes honoree Brillante Mendoza, and the second is the late film star and former presidential candidate Fernando Poe Junior (FPJ), who was defeated by Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2004 in what is now considered to be a deeply flawed election. Coco has starred in three of Mendoza’s gruelingly bleak films.
Each is groundbreaking but none more so than the 2009 release Kinata, for which Mendoza won the best director award at Cannes in 2009. Here, he’s a criminology student with a young family who is desperately in need of extra cash. He ends up witnessing the abduction, rape, murder, and dismemberment of a sex worker.
Mendoza’s Manila is dark, forbidding and tragic. For Coco, working with the director was formative: “I realized there were no limits and that I was making films where I had to show all of myself and put everything on the table.” Separately, Ang Probinsyano is a remake of FPJ’s 1997 film of the same name.
“I have idolized FPJ since I was a boy. Growing up, I watched almost every FPJ film,” Coco said. Naturally, when he first thought of doing a story about the police, FPJ’s classic was the obvious choice. Indeed, Susan Roces, FPJ’s widow, plays the grandmother in the series, providing a crucial emotional anchor amid the melodrama.
Of course, politics is never far from the higher reaches of Philippine showbiz and Coco has been spotted at campaign sorties for FPJ’s daughter, Senator Grace Poe. He’s straightforward: “I am for her. This is the culture of the Filipino. We are conservative, religious and familial.”
What’s particularly worrying is the fact that people from mainland China, Taiwan, and Chinese-Filipinos are often mistakenly portrayed as a monolithic group in the Filipino imagination, despite the immense diversity of the Chinese diaspora.
Meanwhile, authoritative surveys show that anti-China sentiments are deep and almost unmoved. According to the Social Weather Stations’ report, China has consistently garnered negative net ratings among Filipinos and stands at the bottom of the list of preferred international partners throughout the years.
Three years into Duterte’s presidency, diplomatic relations with China have entered a “golden age”, but deep-seated grievances against China and the Chinese diaspora continue to linger among Filipino elites and broader society. This only shows the fragility of the ongoing rapprochement.

‘If you hate me, I don’t care,’ Coco Martin says in a new post

‘I’m too old to worry about who likes me and who dislikes me. I have more important things to do,’ says the actor’s Instagram post MANILA, Philippines – Coco Martin once again took to Instagram to post another message to his supposed haters, after his message last Easter Sunday.

Although it had no caption, the photo posted on April 29 said: “I’m too old to worry about who likes me and who dislikes me. I have more important things to do. If you love me, I love you. If you support me, I support you. If you hate me, I don’t care. Life goes on with or without you.”
The post was followed by another one, this time showing a person praying. “When life is rough, pray. When life is great, pray.”Coco did not mention who he was addressing the message to, but it was believed that the posts were in reference to a report that rumored girlfriend Julia Montes supposedly gave birth to their child.
Both Coco and Julia have yet to address the issue. Coco was also being linked to his FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano star Yassi Pressman, who was with him during the show’s tours abroad.

Coco not quite out of 2019 MMFF

The report that Coco Martin’s film with Ai-Ai delas Alas and Jennylyn Mercado has been dropped from the 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) was not quite accurate. It’s true that his entry didn’t make it to the first “Magic Four” (based on screenplay) but he still has a chance in the next “Magic Four” (based on finished product).
The first four are K(Ampon) of Quantum Films; Miracle in Cell #7 of Viva Communications; Mission Unstapabol: The Don Identity of M-Zet Productions and APT Entertainment; and Momalland of Star Cinema/Viva Films. According to an MMFF spokesman, there shouldn’t be any duplication of the genre. K(Ampon), starring Derek Ramsay and Kris Aquino, is horror; Miracle with Aga Muhlach and Nadine Lustre, heavy drama; Unstapabol with Vic Sotto and Maine Mendoza, family drama; and Momalland with Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis, comedy.
Coco’s film is pure action, hopefully, the only one of that genre in the finished film category, so he should keep his fingers crossed. The announcement of the last four entries is on Sept. 20 so there’s enough time for prospective companies to improve their entries.
As in previous MMFF, the criteria are 40 percent Artistic Excellence, 40 percent Commercial Appeal, 10 percent Filipino Cultural Sensibility, and 10 percent Global Appeal. Meanwhile, newly-sworn-in MMFF executive committee member Sen.
Bong Go is pushing for the holding of another MMFF in June as a boost to the industry. Pursuant to P.D. No. 1459, an Executive Committee was formed to handle MMFF. In 1977, PD No. 1647 reconstituted the Executive Committee and transferred the management of the MMFF to the Office of the Metro Manila Commission (MMC), the precursor of today’s Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
“It’s a big honor for me to be included in the MMFF Execom,” said Sen. Bong in his speech after he was sworn in by MMDA head Danilo Lim during the announcement of the first four entries last week. “At nakikiisa ako sa hangarin nating lahat na mas palakasin at paunlarin natin ang industriyang patuloy na nagbibigay ng trabaho at kaginhawaan sa marami nating mga kababayan.”
Sen. Bong also stated that he will push for measures to address the concerns and needs of the industry as some of his friends have asked for his help to uplift it. Go also assured the members of the industry that he will craft bills that will be valuable to them.
He further guaranteed that he and Pres. DU30 will always support the industry and Filipino films. One of the judges of last year’s MMFF, Sen. Go was at The Theatre at Solaire to award the winners in December 2018. So far, there are several film fests (aside from the MMFF), among them PPP (Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino), Cinemalaya, QCinema, Cinema One Originals, CineManila, and ToFarm Film Festival.
If ever, noted a prominent director, there might be more film fests than films. Well, anyway, the more the merrier. Source: Phil Star

That was Yassi Pressman’s matter-of-fact response when asked to address the persistent rumors romantically linking her to Coco Martin, who plays her husband in the long-running ABS-CBN action series “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.” “Hindi po.”

That was Yassi Pressman’s matter-of-fact response when asked to address the persistent rumors romantically linking her to Coco Martin, who plays her husband in the long-running ABS-CBN action series “FPJ’s Ang Probins The 24-year-old actress surmised that such speculations could be simply chalked up to the chemistry she had with Coco onscreen.
“Perhaps they just get carried away by the story. And I’m happy if that’s how they feel. That’s a good thing,” Yassi recently told reporters at her launch as the endorser of fast-food chain Greenwich’s Lasagna Supreme. Yassi is no stranger to intrigues.
And she has learned to take them in stride through time. “I don’t have anything to be guilty about. And if I hear something that’s not true, OK lang,” she said. In fact, Yassi’s love life may not be as eventful as some people try to make it out to be.
“I’m just as happy—busog ako when it comes to the different aspects of my life, including work and family,” said Yassi, who neither confirmed nor denied if she’s seeing someone at the moment. “My focus is more on my family,” she added, “and on myself—my self-growth.” “Ang Probinsyano” has been on air since September 2015 and is showing no obvious signs of ending any time soon.
